A new civil society organisation, Movement Against Corruption (MAC) yesterday said it would stop at nothing to prevent and eradicate all forms of corrupt practices and abuse of power in both public and private sectors in the country.
MAC, which is a coalition of over 50 CSOs and rights activists, said strategies to execute its objectives are in place.
According to the group, the Movement is birthed in response to the imperative for CSOs and the public to have a common and formidable platform through which Nigerians can confront the menace of corruption.
Reading a statement jointly signed by members of the steering committee of the organization at its inauguration, held at MKO Abiola house, Ikeja Lagos, the chairman Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin said the group has resolved to "reject any form of policy or legislation from any tier or arm of the government, aimed at encouraging acts of corruption, particularly designed to shield corrupt elements, and giving amnesty to those indicted for corrupt practices."
To achieve its objectives, the Movement says it will sensitise members of the public on the urgent need to "possess ownership of war against corruption in the country, by getting involved in its advocacy".
The statement reads further: "MAC, as part of its efforts, shall encourage sponsorship of legislations that will strengthen the various anti-corruption agencies in the country, while also rejecting any attempt, particularly from the National Assembly, at foot-dragging in making legislations aimed at strengthening the fight against corruption.
"We therefore wish to state that, as child of necessity, MAC will galvanise the Nigerian people towards an efficient anti-corruption campaign through rallies, protest, sensitisation, workshops and other forms of civic and democratic engagement."
It said part of its action plans is to hold a march against corruption with the theme "Red Card Against Corruption" slated for 30th of this month in Lagos and Abuja.
